Laser hair removal for PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (known as PCOS) is a very common hormone disorder that affects how a woman’s ovaries function. Symptoms can vary for each individual, but the most common symptoms of PCOS include excess facial and body hair growth, weight gain, acne and oily skin.

PCOS affects one in five women in the UK, and a lot of our clients who make appointments for laser hair removal in Glasgow suffer from PCOS.

Why does PCOS cause excess hair growth?

Excess hair growth for women with PCOS is caused by the higher levels of male hormones in their body – primarily testosterone and androstenedione – otherwise known as ‘androgens’.

Androgens are produced in the ovaries, fat cells, and adrenal glands. Earlier in life, androgens trigger puberty, inciting hair growth in the underarm and pubic areas. When a woman suffers from PCOS, this can also trigger excess hair growth on the face, buttocks, breasts, chest, abdomen and back, amongst other places.

How does laser help with PCOS?

Laser hair removal is the ideal treatment for women with PCOS. Other hair removal options like waxing, plucking and shaving are frustrating for women with PCOS as they take up a lot of time and hair regrowth is quicker and harder to control.

Laser hair removal treatments permanently reduce hair growth by up to 90%. With each laser hair removal session, you should see hair regrowth is finer and fewer.

As hair growth from PCOS is caused by hormonal irregularities in the body, regular laser sessions will be necessary to maintain results. That’s why we offer pay-as-you-go treatments for women with PCOS – you can just pay for top-up sessions as and when you need them once you’ve completed your initial round of treatment.
